Наприклад, коли ми вводимо рядок як «HELLO», комп’ютер безпосередньо не зберігає введений рядок. Натомість система зберігає рядки в їх еквівалентному значенні ASCII, наприклад «7269767679». Значення ASCII H дорівнює 72, E дорівнює 69, L дорівнює 76, а O дорівнює 79.
